Venezuela sits close enough to the equator that the usual four-season framework simply doesn't apply. What you get instead is a rhythm shaped by rain: a long dry season from roughly December through April, followed by a wet season that builds from May and peaks somewhere around October before gradually releasing its grip. Temperatures stay remarkably stable throughout the year, hovering between 27°C (80°F) and 29°C (84°F) on the coast and in the lowlands, which means the decision about when to visit Venezuela is less about warmth and more about mud, river levels, and how much afternoon rain you're willing to accept. That said, the country's extraordinary vertical range complicates any simple wet-dry narrative. The Andes in the west can be cold at altitude, the Orinoco llanos flood so comprehensively in the wet season that they become a kind of inland sea, and the cloud-forest approaches to Canaima and Angel Falls operate on their own logic entirely. What the data above reflects is a coastal and lowland average, and it's a decent indication of conditions in Caracas and along the Caribbean shore. For the tepuis of the Guiana Highlands or the high Andean páramos, expect considerably cooler temperatures regardless of season. The one constant across Venezuela is humidity sitting at around 70% year-round. This isn't the suffocating tropical weight you'd feel in Southeast Asia, but it's enough that dry-season months feel noticeably more comfortable than the numbers alone suggest, and wet-season months feel heavier than a 28°C (82°F) reading implies.

Best Time to Visit

Recommended timing for different travel styles.

Beach
For beach and relaxation travel, the window from late December through March is hard to beat. Rainfall sits at its lowest, the trade winds keep the Caribbean coast of Venezuela pleasantly breezy, and Los Roques and Morrocoy are at their most photogenic. April edges into transitional territory but is still largely reliable.
Cultural
For cultural exploration of Caracas, Mérida, or the colonial towns, January and February offer the most comfortable conditions: cooler nights, manageable humidity, and the city's cultural calendar in full swing after the holiday period. The Feria del Sol in Mérida typically falls in late February, which layers in a reason to be there specifically then.
Adventure
For adventure and hiking, the calculus shifts depending on what you're chasing. Angel Falls is most spectacular when the wet season swells the rivers and the falls run at full volume, making June through September the counterintuitive sweet spot despite the rain. The approach to Canaima is easier when water levels are high. Trekking in the Andes near Mérida, however, favors the dry months when trails are firm and the páramo landscape has a particular clarity to it.
Budget
Budget travelers will find that Venezuela's wet season, from May through November, comes with fewer crowds and generally lower accommodation costs, at beach destinations. The trade-off is real: afternoon downpours are frequent and occasionally dramatic, and some minor roads become impassable. That said, mornings in the wet season are often well clear, and the landscape is intensely green in a way the dry season simply can't match.

What to Pack

Essentials and seasonal recommendations for Venezuela.

Year-Round Essentials
A lightweight rain jacket or packable poncho
Pack a light rain jacket. It's non-negotiable regardless of when you visit Venezuela. Even in the dry season, unexpected brief showers occur, and in the wet season you'll want something that packs down small enough to carry everywhere without thinking about it.
Reef-safe sunscreen in quantity
Bring quality sunscreen. It matters more than most visitors expect. The combination of strong equatorial sun and reflective water at coastal destinations means the UV index is consistently high even on overcast days, and Venezuelan pharmacies may not carry your preferred brand.
A good insect repellent with DEET or picaridin
Pack insect repellent. It belongs in every bag. Mosquitoes are present year-round but become significantly more active during and after the wet season, in lowland areas and near standing water.
A lightweight but warm layer
Bring a light fleece or sweater. It's worth packing even if your plans are entirely coastal. Evenings can be surprisingly cool, from December through February when temperatures drop to around 17°C (63°F). If you're heading to Mérida or any Andean destination, a proper mid-layer becomes essential rather than optional.
A dry bag or waterproof packing cubes
Waterproof bags or cases protect electronics and documents in the wet season and on any boat-based excursion to places like Los Roques or along the Orinoco.
Plug Type
Type An and Type B
Voltage
120 volts at 60Hz
Adapter Note
Venezuela uses 110V, 60Hz power. North American travelers can plug in directly. European and Australian travelers will need a voltage adapter, as 220-240V devices may not function safely without one.
Skip These Items
Skip heavy jeans, which dry slowly in humid conditions and take up luggage space better used for lighter alternatives formal dress shoes are rarely appropriate in Venezuela's climate and terrain Leave the bulky travel umbrella at home. It's more hindrance than help compared to a compact poncho that frees your hands Don't bring high-end camera equipment without proper waterproofing. It risks damage even in the so-called dry season, when brief showers arrive without warning Avoid excessive cold-weather clothing. It's unnecessary unless your itinerary specifically includes extended time in the Venezuelan Andes above roughly 3,000 meters
